Educación superior en Chile: ¿fin de un ciclo de expansión para las universidades?

Resumen

El presente trabajo muestra una mirada contingente de los principales desafíos y dinámicas de cambio que enfrenta el sistema de educación superior chileno, bajo una perspectiva histórica y comparada de su evolución. Se presenta una breve historia de la educación superior chilena, su evolución en datos a contar del año 1990 y su contexto internacional, terminando por mostrar algunos aspectos gruesos que definen el escenario actual de la educación superior chilena. Al finalizar el trabajo, se señala que Chile se enfrenta a un escenario de cambio estructural, institucional y político que puede reconfigurar completamente la evolución y la estructura de su sistema de educación superior. En esta dirección, una de las principales tendencias de cambio es el estancamiento de la matrícula en sus universidades.

Abstract

This paper entails an overall contingency look on the main challenges and change dynamics currently facing the Chilean tertiary education system; with this analysis being undertaken on the basis of its historical perspective and its comparative evolution. This document also encompasses a brief history of the Chilean tertiary education, its overall data evolution as from year 1990 onwards and its international context; culminating with a display of some raw ideas and concepts aimed at defining the current tertiary education overall scenario. Towards the end of this analytical paper we highlight that Chile is currently facing an overall and wide-ranging structural, institutional and political change. Such change may well bring about a full reconfiguration of the evolution and structure of its tertiary education system. As we move along this route we note that one of the main change trends is the stagnation of the total number of university student registrations.
